Title: Small archive pertaining to the Pine Valley Golf Club, New Jersey Author: ** Place: New Jersey Publisher: Date: c.1900-1940 Description: Archive of letters, photographs, plans, and other material relating to the Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, New Jersey. Housed in sleeves in a three-ring binder. Interesting early collection of material relating to James Govan's involement with George Crump and the beginning and early days of the Pine Valley Golf Club. In 1913 George Crump hired James Govan, then at the St. David's Club west of Philadelphia, who had learned the trade of making wooden clubs at Forgan in St. Andrews, to be club maker, professional and greenskeeper at Pine Valley. James Govan died in 1943 and his son, George succeeded him until he retired in 1977. This archive descended in the family and consists of approximately 50 pieces of material, which includes the following: A 1902 letter which presents Govan with a purse for the purpose of playing in the Open championship, with a listing of 25 men, who contributed, including Crump from the Philadelphia area; two letters from 1905 and one from 1910 to Govan from the Brown's Mills N.J. golf course asking for his help with re-building their course; 21 pages of typewritten and penciled reports about the treatment of the course in 1920; financial statement of 1923 with letter from the club president; by-laws booklets of 1922 and 1928; 3 letters from Govan's patent attorneys concerning his submission of a patent for a club he invented during 1930-33, along with the blueprints of his club addressed to him at Pine Valley; a 20-page typewritten surveyor's report of the airline or level measurements of each hole of the Pine Valley Course, 1933, with Govan's hand annotations; a page of recommendations for the course re-design in November of 1934; two 8x10" photographs of Govan, one standing in his clubmaking shop and another standing in front of the building; approximately 20 8x10" photographs of golfers playing the course, many with interesting landscape backgrounds; printed Statement of Operations 1938; 4 copies of the 1939 score summary of the 5th annual Pine Valley pro-am matches; early copy of the David Forgan Golf Creed broadside and about 20 miscellaneous 4x5" black & white Pine Valley photographs mostly of players and people on the course. Lot Amendments Condition: The material generally in very good condition with a little wear to some page edges. Item number: 199654
