[Europe?], ca 1860s. 16¾ x 11 1/8 in. (42.5 x 28 cm). Colored lithograph mounted on wood panel, cut into 132 jigsaw pieces, VERY FINE AND COMPLETE. Assembled in its original wood molding frame and box. Together with an original uncut lithograph of the same image mounted on the wood panel cover (worn in some areas with loss, stained, a few minor repairs); preserved in a cloth covered drop-back case, with a compartment for the box, and trays for the puzzle and cover. A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL FROM THE ABOLITIONIST PERIOD, COMPLETE WITH ITS ORIGINAL BOX The composition depicts a large central female allegorical figure representing 'America' as Emancipator with a crown of stars, carrying broken shackles in her right hand and a bunch of ivy in her left, she stands above a group of slaves kneeling prostrate before her. The surrounding vignettes in the composition depict scenes of suffering slaves endured while captive in America, including the auction of a slave family and various punishments that typically befell them. The final scene shows a Union officer holding out a document (the Emancipation Proclamation) to a frustrated plantation owner as the pleading slave family looks on. "Realizing that sometimes words were inadequate, abolitionists also spoke through pictures. Images used to further anti-slavery agendas idealized and mythologized slaves, thus elevating the abolitionist cause..." ( "I will be heard!" EXTREMELY RARE: only two other copies of this puzzle are recorded (both incomplete), and are located at Cornell University Library and the Municipal History Museum of Rotterdam.
