1p, 6.25 x 7.75 in., Apr. 6, 1829, Duplin County, North Carolina. Elizabeth Houston to Lewis Thomas Houston (her grandson), the Negroes Barbara, Cezar and Venis. For ten dollars and her great affection. 1p, partially printed, 8.5 x 14 in., April 26, 1853, South Carolina. William and Jane Mootry to Dr. Elias Horlbeck of Charleston, for $3,570, sell Ben, Sam, Venus, Peggy, Amos and David. 1p, approx. 7.5 x 12.25 in., Jan. 1, 1857, Wilcox Co., Alabama. Negroes sold belonging to the estate of Malcom McNeill. Martin, Matlida, Moriah & Julia to William Hogg for $1825; Bill to Daniel Sellers for $1485.50; Henry to Jeremiah Fail for $1485; Margaret to Daniel Sellers for $1205; Caroline to Benjamin Hoff for $1105; John to William McNeill for $1230; Anderson to William Hogg for $857. Group of 5 slips that appear to be receipts from the sale of an estate. Each about 1.75 x 5.25 in., more or less. Each has several "slaves over 16" plus other items - horses, cattle, buggies, guns, furniture, silver plate and jewelry, even a watch. The slaves are not named, but the various receipts are for 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 slaves. 10pp, approx. 8.5 x 13 in., Montgomery Co., Alabama and Washington Co., Texas; the settling of the estate of George Washington Johnson. The first pages are the inventory and appraisal of the estate, which includes "1 Negro Woman and 2 Children" valued at 1001.00. Appraisal dated June 12, 1839. On May 4, 1840, "Charles F. McDade and Nancy Ann McDade, his wife, formerly widow of G.W. Johnson decd. for and in consideration of the filial feeling, good will and respect which we have unto and towards James Henry and George Ann Johnson, heirs of G.W. Johnson decd. and in further consideration of the sum of ten dollars to us in hand...do hereby grant, five, bargain....unto the said James Henry and George Ann Johnson the following property, viz. - one Negro woman named Catharine about twenty four years of age. Also one Girl named Elizabeth about four years of age. Also one girl named Lydia about two years of age." At some point one or more of these parties moves to Texas. Then a dispute arises, the nature of which is not clear, but a Rufus Penn, husband of George Ann Johnson Penn appears as an additional party in depositions dated 1857 and 1859. Condition: First item is a bit light with some water stains. The receipts are written on the back of other receipts or a similar record. The probate papers have folds.
