Lot of 3, including a sixth plate tintype of Jesse C. Johnston (1844-1897). Johnston enlisted on November 7, 1861 and was appointed to the rank of sergeant in Co. D of the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry. His unit skirmished in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia before participating in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. Johnston was discharged on December 26, 1864, when his term of service expired. Completed by two period documents, the first of which is a general affidavit, wherein Susan A. Johnston, Jesse's widow, claims that her husband contracted heart disease during his military service; the second document, a "Notice of Issue and Fees" from the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, originally accompanied a voucher for receipt of Jesse's pension, August 1898.
