Indomitable); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (178015 C.P.O., H.M.S. George Edward Over was born in Mavagissey, Cornwall on 20 January 1878. A Servant by occupation, he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1894 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in December 1894. Over was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in January 1896 when on H.M.S. St. George. Serving on H.M.S. Blonde, November 1896-August 1898 he was promoted to Able Seaman in April 1897 and earned the clasp ‘Sierra Leone’. He was promoted to Leading Seaman in January 1901 when at H.M.S. Nile II; Petty Officer 2nd Class in September 1901 when at H.M.S. Vivid I; Petty Officer 1st Class in July 1902 when on H.M.S. Bulwark and Chief Petty Officer in January 1908 when again on H.M.S. Bulwark. Over was awarded his first L.S. & G.C. Medal on 13 February 1911 when on the battlecruiser H.M.S. Indomitable; his second was issued in error for some unknown reason on 21 February 1918. During the Great War Over served on the minesweeper H.M.S. Seagull, July 1914-September 1917 and then on H.M.S. Lansdowne, September 1917-September 1918. For his services in minesweeping operations between 1 July 1916-31 March 1917 he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 2 July 1917). Chief Petty Officer Over was demobilised on 13 March 1919. With copied service papers, gazette and census extracts and East & West Africa roll extracts - the latter lists a duplicate as having been issued on 25 February 1919 but the above medal is correctly impressed for the period.
