Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1943) Ancient Khotan. Detailed Report of Archaeological Explorations in Chinese Turkestan, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1907. 2 volumes including plate vol., 4° (310 x 245mm.), title vignettes, 153 half tone and photogravure plates and plans, some coloured, one large folding lithographed map in pocket at end of plate vol. (Plate XIII torn, blank corner of plate XLI torn away, occasional light spotting, folding map torn with slight loss.) Original red cloth gilt, upper covers with onlaid oval paper panels blocked in gilt, t.e.g. (extremities rubbed, some soiling and old dampstaining, upper cover of vol. one holed). FIRST EDITION of this rare work. No copy is listed in ABPC as having sold at auction for at least the last 25 years. A single volume reprint was published in 1957. (2)
