London: Joannes Nichols, 1779-1785. 5 volumes, 4° (293 x 235mm). 33 engraved plates only (of 34), woodcut diagrams throughout. (Lacking half-titles, one plate in vol. IV and the blank Y4 in vol. III, clean tear affecting 5 lines of text to leaf Bb2 in vol. V, light waterstaining in a few margins of vol.IV, occasional minor spotting and marginal soiling throughout, a little stronger in vol.V.) Contemporary diced calf (rebacked, front cover of vol.IV detached). Provenance : Royal Institution of Great Britain (gilt library stamps on spines). FIRST AND ONLY COLLECTED EDITION of Newton’s works, containing 3 papers by the editor Bishop Horsley. 'This edition is by no means complete… but a very full collection of original texts issued in book form. It is the first to contain his important Geometria Analytica . Additions include Newton’s only printed chemical paper De Natura Acidum , a number of his letters, and, for the first time, the original text of the unfinished Methodus Fluxionum .’ (Babson).
