Beschreibung:

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) J.E. Bruton, the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company and J.R. Barnard (photographers). A collection of 8 carte-de-visite albumen print portraits, London & Cape Town: 1874-1877. 8.5 x 6.2cm. and smaller, mounted prints on card. All window-mounted in a single mount. Provenance : Eric Sommer Collection. A fine collection of portraits of Stanley. The portraits fall into two groups: 6 by the London Stereoscopic Company of the explorer with moustache and goatee beard taken in 1874, shortly after his historic meeting with Livingstone (3 half-length in formal clothing; 1 three-quarter length in formal clothing; 1 full-length dressed for exploring and 1 bust-length dressed for exploring). The second small group, probably taken in 1877 after his Through the Dark Continent journey, show the explorer with grey hair and moustache only (both half-length in formal clothing, one by J.E. Bruton, the second by J.R. Barnard, both of Cape Town). (8)
