(Occasional very light spotting, six preliminary leaves to vol. I more severely affected, without the atlas.) Handsome contemporary red straight-grain morocco gilt, spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt (spines darkened, extremities slightly rubbed and occasional scuff marks to boards). Provenance : neat ownership inscription to front free endpapers. HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITION of the text of the official account of the Macartney Embassy to the Imperial Court of Emperor Chien-lung written by the Ambassador's deputy, one of two hundred academics and diplomats who were supported on the mission by five hundred sailors and staff.
