Sir Frank Brangwyn RA (British, 1867-1956)Zanzibar signed, dated and inscribed 'Frank Brangwyn 1891 . Zanquabar.' (lower right) oil on canvas 76 x 101.5cm (30 x 40in).FootnotesProvenance With The Fine Art Society, London. Sir Ernest Sirdfield Harston, CBE (acquired from the above). By descent to his daughter, Barbara Harries Hunter. On long term loan to the Bermuda National Gallery. By descent to the current owners. Private collection, UK. Exhibited London, Royal Academy, Diploma Gallery, Exhibition of Works by Sir Frank Brangwyn R.A., 10 October - 30 November 1952, no. 465. Bermuda, Bermuda National Gallery, Highlights of the BNG Collection, 2014. Literature V. Galloway, The Oils and Murals of Sir Frank Brangwyn R.A, Leigh-on-Sea, 1962, p. 70, cat no. 812. Frank Brangwyn made a number of trips to Africa in the early 1890s, and he is known to have visited South Africa in 1891, sailing with William Hunt Galloway's 1962 catalogue lists some 51 South African works. While there is no specific record of the artist's trip to Zanzibar, the dating of the present lot suggests that he may have visited East Africa during this same 1891 expedition. This particular trip was cut short, apparently because of a shortage of funds. Brangywn later visited Morocco with fellow artist Dudley Hardy (see Sotheby's, London, 12 July 2007, lots 79 and 80). The present work was shown at the 1952 retrospective at the Royal Academy, a large exhibition of some 470 works; this was the first time that the RA had honoured a living artist with retrospective exhibition. We are grateful to Dr. Libby Horner for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. The work will be listed in her online catalogue of the Works of Frank Brangwyn reference O - 4362.
