Beschreibung:

sinew-sewn and beaded using colors of medium blue, dark blue, red white-heart, greasy yellow, pea green, white, and pumpkin; bag embellished with tin cones filled with red horsehair; accession tag with 57.13 Vincent, sewn to inside closing flap, height 13.75 in. x width 23 in. fourth quarter 19th century According to the Southern Oregon Historical Society records, this bag was donated by George E. Vincent, the son of Harley John Vincent (1863-1943), to the Society in 1957. The bag is described on the gift agreement by Vincent's son as: One beaded buckskin hunting bag - made by the Indians. It was taken from the body of a dead Indian at the battle of Pine Ridge Agency where, and at the time "Sitting Bull", chief of the Sioux, was killed. At the time the bag contained eleven bloody scalps, and a quantity of "pemmican" - the Indian's warpath food, which was mixed together in typical Indian disregard for cleanliness. Blood stains from these scalps still show and stain the bag. - George Vincent February 17, 1957 Although the story presented by Vincent's son may have some errors, Harley John Vincent was a private in the First Infantry, Company C from 1889-1891. According to regimental history, the First Infantry, Company C, together with Companies A, B, D, E, G, and H, spent the winter through early spring of 1891, guarding the Pine Ridge Indian Agency. Hence Vincent probably assisted with the burials after the Massacre of Wounded Knee in December 1890. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Southern Oregon Historical Society; Collected by Harley John Vincent (1863-1943) Condition: Condition requests can be obtained via email (danica@cowans.com) or by telephone (513-871-1670).
