SILVESTER MAZZOLINI DE PRIERO (1456-1523). Dialecticae compendium . Venice: Otinus de Luna, for Alexander Calcedonius, 18 June 1496. Chancery 4° (185 x 132mm). Collation: a-d 8 e 4 (a1r title page, a2r text, e4r colophon, e4v blank). 35 leaves (of 36, lacking a1). 46 lines. Type: 3:68G. 3- to 7-line initial spaces, most with guide-letters, two full-page and three small woodcut diagrams. (Marginal dampstaining, affecting text in last two quires, 2 small wormholes on last leaf.) 19th-century mottled paper over boards, gilt title label on front cover (spine scuffed). Provenance : Retz, Dominican Convent (18th-century stamp). FIRST EDITION of this Aristotelean treatise. Mazzolini later gained fame as Luther's first Italian literary opponent. Pope Leo X's court theologian and Rome's censor of books, Mazzolini was commissioned to examine Luther's theses on indulgences in 1517, and was subsequently appointed theological examiner for the heresy case against the German reformer. He earned the contempt of Erasmus who believed Mazzolini's first polemical work to be clumsy and responsible for provoking Luther's first step towards his contestation of papal authority at the Leipzig Disputation of 1519 and later anti-papal polemics. RARE. Not in the British Library or the Bibliothéque nationale de France. HC *13344; Polain (B) 3542; Sander 5870; IGI 8989; Goff S-520 (Huntington Library only).
