Silver medal struck on behalf the Viennese Jewish community (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wein) in honor of Ludwig August Frankl. [Vienna, 1880]. Made by Carl Radnitzky. Obverse: portrait of Frank surrounded by the legend "L : A : Frankl Ritter V : Hochwart". Signed "C. Radnitzky". Reverse: Coat of arms beneath the year 1880, surrounded by a German legend. Dr. Ludwig August Ritter von Frankl-Hochwart (1810-1894), was an Austrian-Jewish teacher, reporter, author, poet, and founder of the Lemel school in Jerusalem. In 1838 he was appointed secretary of the Viennese Jewish community and was responsible for the community archives. At his initiative, a Jewish school for the blind was established outside Vienna, and a statue of Friedrich Schiller was erected. In 1880 he was awarded the "Freedom of the City" in Vienna.
