"Jacob Leonard now living as I suppose in Woodstock who removed there from...Taunton or near it, has owed me a sum of money from before the war, inclosed is his note renewed in 1784...While he promised to pay long ago, it is time it was paid. I pray you to collect it for me and inform me as soon as you can by the way of Major Morgan of Brimfield or any other good conveyance whether the man is likely to pay it soon, what his circumstances are...Major Morgan who introduces me to you on this occasion will forward any letter from you." Although common in documents signed, Paine autograph letters signed are rare. -- GERRY, Elbridge. Autograph letter signed ("E Gerry") to Nathaniel Peabody, Philadelphia, 25 May 1780. 1 page, folio, 307 x 189mm (12 x 7.3/8in.), integral autograph address panel . Gerry writes "a member of a Committee of Congress at Head Quarters, Morristown" on financial matters: "I have only time to enclose you some papers & to inform you that I have no doubt of being able to leave this city on the 29th. I have been obliged to take 9000 dollars of your warrant in a bill of exchanges, I am as much at a loss(?) for negotiating it, as I was in procuring the payment thereof; but shall discharge the note...Nothing new from the southward or any other quarter. Remember me to all friends particularly to General Schuyler, Baron Steuben, etc." (2)
