Grand was born Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke in County Down, Ireland (1854-1943). She was intelligent and not happy with the expected role of a 19th century young woman. She eventually embarked on a literary career, reinventing herself as Madame Sarah Grand. She was later active promoting women's suffrage and "rational dress" for women, as well as the health benefits of exercise (she was hooked on cycling). Furness was an early Unitarian clergyman in Philadelphia, serving the First Unitarian Church of Phila. for 50 years.
