SIGNED COPY OF MACARTHUR'S V-J DAY SPEECH, "TODAY THE GUNS ARE SILENT." Typed Manuscript Signed ("MacA"), 3 ½ pp, 4to, aboard USS Missouri, September 2, 1945, on onion skin paper, being a transcript of MacArthur's speech given at the Formal Surrender of Japan, signed and inscribed at the right margin of p 2, mild toning overall, leaf 4 date stamped, trimmed and with original ink signature excised, in original War Department envelope with Cleveland Military District return address stamped to upper left corner, fine. On September 2, 1945, the day the Japanese formally surrendered aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, General Douglas MacArthur broadcast a short speech marking the end of war by emphasizing the need to end all wars. In part: "Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A Great victory has been won. The skies no longer rain death—the seas bear only commerce—men everywhere walk upright in the sunlight. The entire world lies quietly at peace. The holy mission has been completed. And in reporting this to you, the people, I speak for the thousands of silent lips, forever stilled among the jungles and the beaches and in the deep waters of the Pacific which marked the way. I speak for the unnamed bravek millions homeward bound to take up the challenge of that future where they did so much to salvage from the brink of disaster ... A new era is upon us. Even the lesson of victory itself brings with it profound concern, both for our future security and the survival of civilization. The destructiveness of war potention, through progressive advances in scientific discovery, has in fact now reached a point which revises the traditional concept of war...." This copy features the following inscription from MacArthur on p 2: "Do not send out as it. Redo this page! / MacA." Apparently p 4 once featured MacArthur's inked signature, but it was defaced with a cartoon, and later removed. See illustration.
