Henderson (1877-1944), born in Springfield, was an African-American poet whose works were mostly in dialect. This "dialectic" style was popular around the turn of the century. Contemporaries such as Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a Dayton native, had achieved national recognition, and James Whitcomb Riley was writing in "Hoosier dialect."
