Dec. 1924." In 1919 at the instigation of J. Edgar Hoover under the Alien Act of 1918, Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, and over 200 other "alien" radicals were deported to the Soviet Union aboard the S.S. Buford. This was her report after two years residence in that country under the incompetent and brutal reign of the Bolsheviks. "I found reality in Russia grotesque, totally unlike the great ideal that had borne me upon the crest of high hope to the land of promise." John Turner was an English anarchist who had also been deported from the USA earning the distinction of being the first deportee under the 1903 Anarchist Exclusion Act. He was a lifelong labor activist and the publisher of Freedom: A Journal of Libertarian Thought, Work and Literature. With Emma Goldman's help, Turner was represented by Clarence Darrow and Edgar Lee Masters before the Supreme Court at his 1904 trial.
