SIEBOLD, PHILIPP FRANZ VON. [Manuscript notebook in Dutch entitled:] "Shrubs of Japan divided according to P. Rinnen's manner by daughter of Siebold." [Japan], 1828. 4to, 256 x 187 mm., original stitched wrappers, rubbing to upper edges. MANUSCRIPT, 60 leaves of thin paper, each folded at fore-edge and stitched in gutter, printed blue ruling, written on 118 pages. Listing nearly 900 Japanese plants Siebold had discovered, in form of binomials, their previous descriptions cited (for example Thunberg Flora and Icones ); otherwise entered as Siebold's species, and with the Japanese names, in Japanese characters. Von Siebold's type specimes are in Leningrad, along with 850 drawings. The present manuscript, in conjunction with those types and his Flora Japonica , is an essential document in determining his plant discoveries in Japan.
