SHERMAN, WILLIAM TECUMSEH, General. BRADY, MATTHEW, photographer . Photograph signed ("W.T. Sherman Maj. Genl."), also signed by Sherman's Generals, OLIVER OTIS HOWARD ("O.O. Howard Maj. Gen."), JOHN ALEXANDER LOGAN ("John A. Logan Maj Genl"), WILLIAM BABCOCK HAZEN ("W.B. Maj. Genl."), JEFFERSON C. DAVIS ("Jef C Davis Brvt Maj Gen"), HENRY W. SLOCUM ("H.W. Slocum Maj Genl"), J.A. MOWER ("J.A. Mower Maj. Gen.") and FRANCIS P. BLAIR ("Frank P. Blair Maj Genl"), n.p. n.d. 373 x 460mm. (14 7/8 x 18 1/8 in.), with photographer's imprint on small slips attached at lower margin, unobtrusive horizontal crease from right side, signed by all 8 generals on a separate oblong card, 69 x 409mm. (2 3/4 x 16 in.) attached at bottom (the signature sheet evenly browned, with crack crossing Sherman's signature, which is faded). A striking oversize albumen print, taken just after the conclusion of the Civil War, depicting Sherman and the ranking Generals and Corp Commanders who accompanied him during the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea and the final campaigns in the Carolinas, all in full military uniform. Sherman is seated with folded arms and legs crossed, looking straight at the camera. Sherman is flanked by Logan and Slocum, both seated, and looking left; Logan is copying the Napoleonic pose of hand in jacket, as are Davis and Blair. Howard, Hazen, Davis and Mower stand behind the seated Generals. Blair was not present for the taking of the photograph, so a separate image photographed at another date was carefully pasted onto the portait at the extreme right, to complete the composition. Interestingly, four of the eight generals, including Sherman (wounded at Shiloh) are shown wearing Purple Heart medals. Howard (whose empty tunic sleeve is neatly buttoned to the side of his uniform) lost an arm at Fair Oaks, Logan was wounded at Fort Donelson, and Mower had been wounded in the actions at Corinth.
