Half-title, with price 'One shilling.' Stipple-engraved frontispiece by A. Albanesi after P.T. de Loutherberg. (Repaired tear in blank area of frontispiece, title with small repairs at inner margin.) Early 20th-century panelled calf. Provenance : Esher (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the spelling of 'deference' in the dedication corrected in ink. Rothschild 1844; I.A. Williams p. 219. Oliver GOLDSMITH (1728-1774). The Haunch of Venison, a poetical epistle to Lord Clare . London: J. Ridley and G. Kearsly, 1776. 4° (252 x 202mm). Half-title, with price 'One shilling and sixpence.' Etched portrait of Goldsmith by Bretherton after Henry Bunbury. 20th-century red morocco by J. Kulesho, gilt-lettered, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION, variant imprint with the publishers' names reversed. There are also two states of the half-title, the other with the price lowered to a shilling.
