SHEPHERD, George. To Commodore Sir Edward Belcher, C.B., &c &c., H.M.S. Assistance, Commanding an Expedition in Search of Sir J. Franklin, C.B. Arctic Balloons, For Distributing Messages in the Arctic Region, Supplied to the Arctic Expedition by Order of the Lords Commissioners of Admiralty . [London], 17 April 1852. 2 o (338 x 213 mm). 3 pp. 2 engravings in text of Shephard's balloon design. (Soiled and partially parted along folds, other scattered soiling.) SCARCE ARCTIC BALLOONING PAPER. Shepherd's invention was intended to help explorers distribute messages in the harsh climates they would encounter. This paper outlines the apparatus, mode of using the apparatus and instructions for using the balloons. Shepherd's design involved casks used as generators for making hydrogen gas. Not in Arctic Bibliography.
