Philadelphia: M. Carey & Son, 1820. Aquatint engraved by John Hill, hand-colored (290 x 370 mm). Framed. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. This view was originally published in Shaw's famed Picturesque Views of American Scenery . “Known as ‘The Landscape Album,’ this portfolio of views was a collaboration between the artist, Joshua Shaw and the aquatint engraver, John Hill It was proposed as a work celebrating the ‘best and most popular views’ in America” (Reese). Only 18 plates were included, with three comprising scenes in the Philadelphia area: two on the Schuylkill River and one on its tributary, Wissahickon Creek. "The first systematic attempt to depict the American landscape” and “a foundation work in the history of American color-plate books" (Wohl Collection). first state.
