SHARPE, Richard Bowdler (1847-1909). An Analytical Index to the Works of the Late John Gould F.R.S. London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1893. Large 4° (380 x 271mm). LARGE-PAPER ISSUE. Limitation leaf, half-title, mounted photograph frontispiece portrait of Gould, 12pp. publisher's advertisements, printed in red and black, mainly for works by Gould. (Some light spotting, especially to preliminaries and last two leaves of advertisements.) Original publisher's green half morocco, titled in gilt on front cover and spine, in protective clear plastic wrapper (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch (armorial bookplate and shelf-mark label). FIRST EDITION, NUMBER 40 OF 100 COPIES ON LARGE PAPER. Sharpe's comprehensive work is an indispensable reference book, not only because of the monumental index, which lists every bird or mammal figured by Gould under its scientific names (both by genera and by species) and popular names, but also because it contains the "frequently quoted and very valuable . . . personal biographical memoir of Gould" (Sauer). Sharpe became acquainted with Gould in 1862, when Gould visited the village of Cookham, Berkshire, to go fishing. The friendship continued until Gould's death in 1881, and Sharpe writes warmly and revealingly about Gould's character, family life and business maxims in the memoir. He also includes a list of Gould's published works and 'Opuscula'. Sauer p.338-40; cf. Zimmer p.582.
