Shackleton family of Sydenham association.- [Blake (Gertrude Mary, wife of Edgar Frederick Blake, wine merchant, of Hillington House, Amblecote Road, Lee, Kent, 1847-94, later of 75 Lee Road, Blackheath, 1856-1956)] 3 diaries, autograph manuscript, 326pp., 2 vol. several leaves of calendar excised at front, 1 vol. 1f. loose, slightly browned, hinges a little weak in places, original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt, 8vo, 1908, 1909 & 1915. ⁂ A detailed set of diaries written by a widow in Edwardian London. Blake records her long-standing friendship with the Shackleton family living in Sydenham, and with Gladys Shackleton in particular, sister of Sir Ernest Shackleton the explorer. By the time of these diaries Ernest Shackleton had moved away but his wider family, including his parents and sisters and brothers still lived in Sydenham. An avid theatre goer Gertrude Blake records every play she sees at the beginning of each volume and on the day in question. Plays seen include Peter Pan, Admirable Crichton, The Passing of the Third Floor Back by Jerome K. Kerome etc. Blake also attends dances and has a lively social life. During the First World War Blake records Zeppelin attacks over London at Shoreditch; and makes several mentions of her uncle Brigadier-General Martin Newman Turner (1865-1944). Also mentioned is her son, Gilbert Alan Blake (1887-1971), later Major General in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
