FIRST EDITION, NUMBER 4 OF 300 COPIES SIGNED BY ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE SHORE PARTY. Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962) was a Canadian Arctic explorer and ethnologist. He was born at Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, of Icelandic descent. The connections between himself and Shackleton's expedition went further than merely having polar exploration in common. In the t.l.s. included with the present work, Stefansson states that he personally knew Armtage, David, Mackaye, Mawson, Murray, Priestley, Shackleton and Wilde. Stefansson recruited Mackaye and Murray to serve in his ill-fated expedition to explore the regions west of Parry Archipelago 'Mackaye was eventually surgeon and Murray oceanographer of our Karluk (Canadian Arctic Exploration of 1913-18) and both were lost after the sinking of the Karluk in early 1914'.
