SHACKLETON, Ernest H. (1874-1922). South. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917. London: William Heinemann, 1920. The first edition account of the voyage of the Endurance , inscribed by Shackleton to the carpenter who outfitted the Quest and signed by 22 members of her crew. The Endurance was crushed by the ice in the Weddell Sea, stranding the crew over the Antarctic winter of 1915. Shackleton led a small team on an 800 mile open-boat journey to South Georgia in order to mount a rescue of the remaining men, all of whom survived. Four years later, he purchased and outfitted the Quest for a fourth expedition to Antarctica, but died of a heart attack en route. The present book may be one of the last he signed before his death. The fourth impression of the first edition, on superior paper to earlier printings made during WWI. Renard 1463; Rosove 308.A4; see Spence 1107. Octavo (248 x 154mm). Color frontispiece; folding map; 45 leaves of plates, many double-sided; several newspaper clippings related to Shackleton and Scott laid in (occasional light spots). Publisher’s original decorated blue boards, with silver gilt Endurance on upper board, in custom cloth box (light wear to hinges). Provenance : William Bloodworth (c. 1921; presentation inscription, ship’s carpenter) – Phyllis Bloodworth (later 20th century; signature, possibly William’s daughter) – Henry Sotheran, Ltd.
