SFORZA, Ludovico 'il Moro', Duke of Milan (1451 - 1508). Letter, written and signed in his name ('Ludovicus Maria Sfortia') to Bartolomeo Calco (his principal secretary), Pavia, 4 July 1492 , sending a letter [not present] concerning the gift to Bernardino da Corte of the park at Pavia, 'Ve remandamo la lettera de la donatione quale havemo fatto a Bernardino da Corte de li Scoladugi del Parco de Pavia, sottoscripta de nostra mane', and asking Bartolomeo to send it on, 5 lines on one page, 285 x 205 mm , address panel on verso ('Magnifico equiti amico nostro carissimo domino Bartholomeo Chalco ducali primo secretario dignissimo. Mediolani cito'), papered seal (slight spotting, small tear not touching text, 2 small repairs on verso). ROSSI, Pietro Maria de (1402 - 1482). Two unpublished letters, written and signed in his name, the first to the citizens of Anzia and the people of Parma, San Secondo, 6 April 1482 , explaining and justifying his conduct, 'Io so impulso, necessitato, constricto e cohacto ad fare de le cose le quale may non pensay ne credetti may dovere bisognare farle'; demanding that fortifications erected against him be demolished and his supporters released, otherwise threatening destruction, and with further warnings and promises, 41 lines on one page, 310 x 200 mm (traces of tape on verso, pencilled annotation incorrectly identifying the addressee as Francesco Gaddi); the second to Francesco Gaddi (Secretary to the Balìa in Florence), San Secondo, 14 June 1482 , declining to send a safeconduct for a Florentine embassy to pass through Parmesan territory occupied by his forces; while he is under threat from the ducal army he has no time to take care of such matters, 11 lines on one page, 150 x 205 mm, address panel on verso (tear, approximately 50 mm, from upper margin touching 5 lines of text and address). In 1492 Ludovico, who had recently concluded an alliance with Charles VIII of France against the King of Naples, was intent upon enlarging the basis of his support at home, hence the gift to Bernardino da Corte, to whom he later entrusted the defence of the Sforza castle in Milan. When in August 1499 the French occupied the city, Bernardino betrayed his confidence and abandoned the fortress only a few weeks later, earning the lasting opprobrium of the Milanese. Both Rossi's letters date from the conflict known as the war of Ferrara, in which Venice and the pope were aligned against Naples, Florence and Milan. Rossi refused to recognise Ludovico Sforza, who had seized power from Bona di Savoia, regent for his nephew Gian Galeazzo Sforza, and Parma and its surroundings, divided between Rossi's supporters and other factions were plunged into chaos.
