Drafted to the 9th Battalion, he was embarked for France in late February 1915, where, a few weeks later, he was wounded in his left leg by a gunshot in the 2nd Battle of Ypres. He was evacuated home aboard the hospital ship Rawalpindi and admitted to hospital at Great Warley in Essex. In September 1916, he transferred to the 10th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers but it was in the 1st Battalion that he returned to active service in France in early 1917. It was in this capacity that he received further gunshot wounds - to his face and shoulders - in the 3rd Battle of the Scarpe on 4 May 1917. Once more evacuated home, he was demobilised as a Lance-Corporal in February 1919. Having then returned to his pre-war occupation as a clerk in the National Health Insurance Commission in Scotland, Holmer transferred as an Executive Officer to the Air Ministry in late 1922, in which capacity he was placed on the Reserve of Air Force Officers. Following the renewal of hostilities, he was appointed a Group Captain in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch and, more precisely, a Chief Auditor in the Middle East and Iraq. Having then been advanced to Hon. Air Commodore in February 1943, and mentioned in despatches ( London Gazette 1 January 1945, refers), he relinquished his commission in July 1946 and took up appointment as a Deputy Director of Accounts in the Civil Service. It was in this capacity that he was awarded the Coronation Medal in 1953. Some of Holmer's papers are held by the Imperial War Museum (Ref. Documents 17250), including 4 mss. diaries covering the period 1914-19; sold with copied research. Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
