Browne], etc. [c.1847]. * Mr. Sponge’s Sporting Tour. x, [2], 408 pp. With 13 hand-colored plates by John Leech [c.1853]. * “Ask Mamma;” or, the Richest Commoner in England. x, [2], 412 pp. With 13 hand-colored plates by John Leech [c.1858]. * “Plain or Ringlets?” viii, [2], 406 pp. With 13 hand-colored plates by John Leech (including additional pictorial title). [c.1860]. * Mr. Romford’s Hounds. viii, [2], 405 pp. With 24 hand-colored plates by John Leech & Hablot K. Browne. [c.1865]. * Hillingdon Hall or the Cockney Squire. Uniformly bound in later half dark maroon levant morocco and marbled boards, ruled in gilt, spines tooled and lettered in gilt with matching gilt vignettes, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, each with protective acetate covers; bound by Henderson & Bisset. Later Editions. Handsome set of these sporting classics. Surtees (1805-1864) "founded, with R. Ackermann the younger, the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, to which he contributed his comic sketches of Mr. Jorrocks…whose adventures to some extent suggested the original idea of Pickwick Papers, reappears in Handley Cross…His…novels deal mainly with the characteristic aspects of English fox-hunting society, but his vivid caricatures, the absurd scenes he describes, the convincing dialect and often repeated catch-phrases, distinguish him from other writers of this genre."
