Beschreibung:

Seneca's Opera philosophica Bernardus de Colonia, 1478 SENECA, Lucius Annaeus (the Younger, c.1-65). Opera philosophica. –Epistolae. –SENECA, Lucius Annaeus (the Elder, 54 BCE-c.39 CE). Declamationes. –Suasoriae. –Controversiae. Treviso: Bernardus de Colonia, 1478. Second edition of the philosophical works of Seneca, the eminently quotable and morally complicated stoic philosopher—illuminated and in a contemporary binding. This edition is a reprint of the first, produced by Mathias Moravus in 1475 at Naples. Seneca was the tutor and enabler of the Roman emperor Nero, by whom he was forced to commit suicide after being implicated in a conspiracy. This is the second of only two editions signed by Bernard of Cologne, both of which were reprinted from editions by Moravus of Naples, suggesting that Bernard may have been previously employed in Moravus' office. His ornate gothic type later passed to Michael Manzolus at Treviso. This edition also includes the works of Seneca’s father, which record the history of the Roman rhetorical schools. HC 14591*; BMC VI 892; BSB-Ink S-266; Bod-inc S-154; IGI 8868; Goff S-369; ISTC is00369000. Median folio (295 x 212mm). 214 leaves. First leaf illuminated with full border and initial O on gold ground, red and blue initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes (some marginal worming at ends, some light stains and spots). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, title in ink on fore-edge (rebacked, a few other areas repaired; cover nearly detached). Provenance: several erased inscriptions on first and last blank leaves.
