Semple R., "Observations on a journey through Spain and Italy to Smyrna and Constantinople comprising a description of the principal places", London, 1808. Second edition (the first the previous year). In 8vo, 19x12cm, 2 volumes complete: 62p., 208p., 254p. and one folding map. Contemporary full leather, spine richly gilt, two covers renewed, some very light scattered spotting, overall very nice and clean. Robert Semple (17661816) was a British traveler and merchant, born at Boston, Massachusetts. After his return from Africa, he travelled in Mediterranean in 18056. He visited Spain and Italy during 1805 and this part is described in volume one. Volume two includes his voyage to the Levant. On the 24th of April 1806 arrived in Greece, at Kithira, he after spent days in Milos providing a fine account for the island. As he kept detailed calendar, his narrative is very precious. He crossed the Archipelago, arrived in Smyrna and then, after a visit to Tenedos, to Constantinople. He returned to Smyrna where he spent two more months in summer 1806 and provides a very detailed account for the city and its environs. A whole chapter of the book is dealing with the character of the modern Turks and Greeks, providing unique information for the every day life in the Levant. He returned in England late 1806. In 1808 made a second journey in Spain, in 1810 in Brazil and west Indies and in 1816 was mortally wounded in a dispute for settlements, at Red River, Americas far west. Not in Atabey, Blackmer or any other known collection. Extremely rare.
