SELOUS, Frederick Courteney (1851-1917). Five autograph letters signed to various correspondents, Regents Park, Worplesdon, Tanga [German East Africa] and Henley on Thames, 23 January 1898 - 30 November 1916 and n.d., praising the climate and pasturage of 'the high and temperate portions' of Rhodesia, writing at length on the food of the giraffe, and, in a letter written shortly before his death in action, responding to unconfirmed rumours of his D.S.O., and describing the process of the campaign in German East Africa -- 'the Germans have retired into the wilderness ... with quite large forces of well trained and well armed black troops ... We are simply rotting here in the hot enervating climate', altogether 6 pages, 8vo, and 5½ pages, 4to , envelope; with two related letters; [ and :] W.D.M. BELL. Three autograph manuscripts signed, n.d., entitled 'Elephant Hunting in the old days', 'An elephant hunter's day' and 'Elephants', the first two apparently early drafts for his Karamojo Safari (1949), the latter a review of an unidentified work, together approximately 11 pages, 4to, and 5 pages, folio .
