To Which is Prefixed a Journal of his Life Author: Penn, William Place: London Publisher: Date: 1771 Description: [4], lxi, [3], 862 pp. (Folio) 39.8x25.2 cm (15¾x9¾"), rebound in modern black cloth lettered in gilt on spine. Institutional bookplate and stamps from Zion Research Library and Friends Library, Philadelphia. William Penn was the son of the admiral and politician Sir William Penn. Penn was a writer, early member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and founder of the English North American colony the Province of Pennsylvania. He was an early advocate of democracy and religious freedom, notable for his good relations and successful treaties with the Lenape Native Americans. Under his direction, the city of Philadelphia was planned and developed. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling to cloth, institutional label removed from spine; front hinge cracked, repair to title page at foot of gutter, title page starting at head, leaves toned, a few spots, Item number: 308565
