Oblong folio, later full embossed morocco, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, edges gilt-ruled, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Volume I had been issued in 1792, and the work was reprinted in 1817 & 1830. John Smith (1749-1831) travelled in Rome between 1776 and 1781, being based primarily in Rome and Naples. He went on to enjoy a successful career in London, thanks to the painterly quality of his drawings tinted with watercolor, and illustrated several travel books. The plates in this volume are handsome and evocative. (The title-page is dated 1796, but the text for Plate 69 mentions an incident that took place in 1798.)
