SEIXAS, MOSES. 1744-1809. Document Signed ("Moses Seixas") being a receipt for payment received of Lucy Ellery Channing, daughter of signer William Ellery, 1 p, 205 x 162 mm, Newport, October 15, 1793, docketed to verso.
WITH: Seixas's "Address of the Hebrew congregation in Newport, Rhode-Island, to the President of the United States of America, August 17, 1790" appearing in the American Museum, Appendix II - Public Papers, p 40, 1790.
RARE DOCUMENT SIGNED BY MOSES SEIXAS AUTHOR OF THE FAMOUS LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON, ELICITING HIS RESPONSE ENSURING RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. Seixas was a first-generation Jewish-American, leader of the Tuoro Synagogue of Newport, Rhode-Island, a Grand Master Mason, and founder of the Bank of Rhode Island. On August 17, 1790, during Washington's visit to Newport, Seixas addressed the President on behalf of the Tuoro congregation.
"Behold a government erected by the MAJESTY OF THE PEOPLE — A government which to bigotry gives no sanction, to persecution no assistance — but generously affords to ALL liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship — deeming every one, of whatever nation, tongue or language, equal parts of the great governmental machine...." Seixas's own words were echoed in Washington's reply, setting a strong precedent for actual religious liberty versus mere tolerance. Washington added that the United States had newly established "an enlarged and liberal policy—a policy worthy of imitation... [which] requires only that that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support."
Documents signed by Moses Seixas are rare, and this is a lovely example, the text likely in the autograph of signer William Ellery, helping his daughter settle her late husband's estate.
