SEEMAN, Berthold (1825-1871). Narrative of the Voyage of H.M.S. Herald During the Years 1845-51, Under the Command of Captain Henry Kellett... Being a Circumnavigation of the Globe and Three Cruizes to the Arctic Regions in Search of Sir John Franklin . London: Reeve and Co., 1853. The first edition. Seeman was the naturalist on board the Herald , having joined the expedition in 1847. His narrative, taken from his and others' records, documents the exploration of most of the west coast of America, Hawaii, the Galápagos, Alaska, Bering Strait, and South America. At the end of April 1848, Captain Kellett, in command of the expedition, was directed to join the search for Sir Franklin, and as a result the Herald made three separate journeys into Alaska and the Arctic Sea. Seeman included in this work an historical summary of the five-year search for Franklin, which can be found in Chapter XII. Arctic Bib. 15680; Chavanne 4125; Hill 1546; Howes S-271; Lada-Mocarski 141; Sabin 78867; Stafleu 11602; Tourville 4039; Wickersham 6593. Two volumes, octavo (221 x 141mm). Half-titles. Tinted lithographed frontispiece in each volume, tinted lithographed folding map in vol. 1 (slight discoloration to map, vol. 2 frontispiece starting). 24-pg publishers' catalogue in vol. 1; ad leaf in vol. 2.
