The Scots Magazine, containing, A General View of the Religion, Politicks, Entertainment, &c. in Great Britain..., 61 volumes, a near-unbroken run, volume I-LXII (lacking only Volume LIX for 1797), Edinburgh: Printed by Sands, Brymer, Murray and Cochran, 1739-1800, woodcut coat of arms to first page of each monthly issue, 96 (of 105) engraved plates, including some folding, contemporary uniform half calf, with red morocco label to spine of each volume, lettered in gilt, with the year stamped in gilt below (1799 volume with large portion of spine, as well as upper cover, missing), a little rubbed and some marks, generally in good condition, 8vo (Qty: 61) A fine run in near-uniform contemporary half calf of one of the oldest magazines still in publication, which was designed as a Scottish equivalent to the Gentleman's Magazine. This run includes important coverage of the political and military struggles which led to the foundation of the United States. Volume XVII (1755) includes A Map of the British and French Settlements in North America. Volume XXI (1759) includes A New Chart of the River St. Lawrence from the Island of Anticosti to Lake Ontario, and A Plan of Quebec, Metropolis of Canada, in North America, and A Plan of the operations at the taking of Quebec, and the Battle Fort near that City, as well as a woodcut map within the text considered to be the first published map showing Pittsburgh. Volume XXXVIII contains A Map of the Country Round Philadelphia, including Part of New Jersey, New York, Staten Island & Long Island, as well as the first Scottish printing of the American Declaration of Independence (August 1776) with commentary. Volume XLIII (1781) includes A Map of Maryland, with part of Virginia and Pensylvania, and Volume LIII (1791) includes Extracts of Letters from Governor Phillip to Lord Sidney... giving an account of the proceedings of the Colony at Botany Bay. Plates not present in this set are: Map of Europe (1758); Plan of the Battle of Minden (1759); Hogarth's Portrait of Mr Wilkes (1769); Pontypridd Bridge (1765); Singular Species of Monkeys (1770); Map of Thirty Miles Round Boston, and of the action near Charlestown (1775); New High School, Edinburgh (1777); Specimen of Music (1777); New Invented Plough (1794). Present, but not called for, is a plan of the Town and Harbour of Mahon and Fort St. Phillips (1756).
