Manual consisting of small chapters discussing the various projections of the sphere, the Pythagorean system, spherical trigonometry, great circle sailing, etc. as well as newer theories such as Lord Napier's so-called "Catholic Propositions" or the methods to calculate longitude by Robertson, Lyon and Witchell. Included are many astronomical and navigational exercises. The initials R.B. ("Finis by R.B.") and "Robert Burn Prisoner of War Depot de Givet, France" refer to a 19th century apprentice on board of the merchant ship Blenheim, native of Beverley in Yorkshire, who was accused of having deserted. Robert Burn was condemned on 7 December 1805 to suffer 6 years in irons together with Thomas Williams who published a book about it. # J.D.
