An affectionate letter to his sister-in-law (the widow of his brother Carl), greeting her after a long silence, 'You know I am always deep in my work -- and letters and musical notes do not deal well together' ('Lass dich nach langer Zeit wieder einmal herzlich begrüssen. Noten wollen sich nicht gut vertragen'), though Clara has always been so good at keeping Pauline informed of their doings. They are safely returned from a trip, though they will soon be setting off again for Leipzig, 'where at the end of May my opera will be performed, then on to Dusseldorff for the winter ('Wir sind glücklich von unserer Reise zurückgekehrt, die nur recht heiter und sehr ergiebig war. Schumann earnestly looks forward to seeing Pauline soon, perhaps in Zwickau, and sends family news and greetings.
