SCHILLER, Friedrich von (1759-1805). Schiller's sämmtliche Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe in einem Bande. Munich, Stuttgart and Tübingen: J.G.Cotta, 1830. Large 8° (265 x 173mm). Title printed in black and blue. Steel-engraved portrait frontispiece by Schuler after Danneker's bust, one full-page facsimile letter in Schiller's hand. (Some spotting to first and last few leaves.) CONTEMPORARY PURPLE MOROCCO BY BRAND OF GENEVA, the covers with a wide decorative border tooled in gilt and blind with fillets and 'gothic' tools, some upon inlays of red and green morocco, all surrounding a central gilt lozenge tooled in gilt onto red, yellow and green morocco inlays, the spine in five compartments with raised bands, the author's name lettered in one, the others tooled in gilt, both they and the bands with onlays of red and green morocco, gilt turn-ins, light purple watered-silk liners and endleaves, g.e., signed at foot of spine: Brand Rel. À Geneve (small neat repair to leather on upper cover, upper joint cracking slightly), slipcase. Provenance : Hans Fürstenberg (booklabel). A VERY FINE ROMANTIC BINDING BY THIS LITTLE-KNOWN GENEVAN CRAFTSMAN. Only one other binding by Brand is recorded (Beraldi sale, part III, 1934, lot 411). The present binding is the first to specify Geneva and in the past it had been assumed that, due to the excellence of the craftsmanship, Brand was Parisian.
