Beschreibung:

SCHEUCHZER, Johann Jakob (1672-1733). Physica Sacra . Augsburg and Ulm: 1731-1735.
SCHEUCHZER, Johann Jakob (1672-1733). Physica Sacra . Augsburg and Ulm: 1731-1735. 4 volumes, 2° (385 x 235mm). Engraved frontispiece in vol. I, 756 further engraved plates after Fussli, 4 of which folding, one partly coloured by a contemporary hand. (Lacking the portraits and plates 1 and 38, some occasional spotting and browning, heaviest to text leaves in vol. IV) Later vellum, gilt tooling to spines (lightly rubbed to extremities). FIRST EDITION IN LATIN of this superbly illustrated work, published simultaneously alongside German, French, and Dutch versions. Physica Sacra , known in German as the Kupfer-Bibel (‘Copper Bible’) due to its impressive range of engravings, is a fascinating study of natural theology – an attempt to reconcile religion with scientific processes. An important work that questions the scientific veracity of biblical stories and anticipates Darwin in its understanding of the history of fossils. Brunet V, 198; Nissen ZBI 3660; Steiger 127, 132, 140, 151.
