Title-page printed in red and black with woodcut vignette, engraved additional title, engraved folding map, woodcut headpieces and initials, woodcut illustrations in-text, some of which full-page; title trimmed at lower edge with restoration including some facsimile, a few instances of light marginal dampstaining. Early vellum; rebacked with old vellum, corners repaired, text block separating following title.
First edition. Johannes Schefferus was a notable Swedish humanist, and his account of Northern Scandinavia was one of the first in-depth studies of the the region. The present work centers on the Sámi people, their customs, education, medicine, and religion. It was published to counter German pamphlets that claimed the success of Swedish military campaigns in the seventeenth century was a result of their use of Sámi "magic." The book was very popular, and quickly translated into a variety of languages. Interestingly, the translation into Swedish did not appear until 1956.
