FIRST EDITION of the Nuremberg Chronicle, a history of the world compiled by the physician and polymath Hartmann Schedel with the assistance of Conrad Celtis and Hieronymus Münzer, largely from books in Schedel's library (now in the Stadtsbibliothek, Nürnberg). The artists Wolgemut and Pleydenwurff are explicitly acknowledged in the colophon; the range and quantity of their woodcuts, which include a Creation sequence, numerous genealogical cuts, and 102 town views, make this the most extensively illustrated book of the fifteenth century.
