Beschreibung:

German souvenir and documentation album of the SMS Scharnhorst . Circa 1909 - 14. Circa 320 vintage collodion paper prints (some reproduction prints). Various sizes, most between circa 11 x 15 cm. Mounted to album pages (buckled, time-stained in edges), bound in contemporary black lacquer boards with metallic silver ornamentation (scratches, some chips in edges), leather spine (28 x 40 cm). A comprehensive album which documents the itinerary of the SMS Scharnhorst as of 1909 up until to the ship's sinking in 1914. It was most likely compiled by a crew member of the ship as it contains group portraits and images only of the Scharnhorst crew . The stops include Ceylon / Colombo , Hongkong , Tsingtau , China , Port Arthur , souvenir photos of Japan , a large group of South Sea island images such as Mariannen Islands and New Guinea with many portraits of natives, chiefs, etc. The photos at the end of the album show crew members in various work stations of the ship such as the kitchen, tailor workshop as well as a series of heavy destruction of two other battle ships ( SMS Seydlitz and SMS Moltke ). Most photographs are numbered in pencil on the album pages and are described in detail on a separate list. Such a comprehensive collection pertaining to the Scharnhost is rare and the compiler was one of the few lucky survivors as he was transferred to another ship before the Scharnhorst was attacked by the British fleet and sunk on Dec. 8, 1914. All crew members went down with the ship. – Some photos with light surface rubbing/scratches, some peeling off mount, some buckled, otherwise most in good to very good condition.
