In 1860, Granville Stuart started "rehabbing" lame oxen in Montana, supplying mining camps and others with beef. Some of the earliest cattle operations came to MT just after the Civil War, when Nelson Story drove in 600 head over the Bozeman Trail to fatten on good Montana grass.
