Feathered brass hilt, stamped "L" on the spine. Yatagan style blade based loosely on the Model 1855 pattern US bayonet. Bayonet is housed in a period U.S. Model 1855 leather scabbard with brass fittings. Most Fayetteville bayonets encountered exhibit heavy use and wear. This bayonet was sold as part of the Ben Michel collection sold in 2007 by James D. Julia. Mr. Michel’s notes state: “This Fayetteville sword bayonet in its original scabbard is one of the finest in existence. The 21 - 3/4” blade is uncleaned with only some age staining. The hilt is also untouched and marked only with a small “L” on the back. The scabbard is original to this saber bayonet and while there is flaking to the leather, it is still sound and complete.” Further examination of the scabbard has revealed that Mr. Michel was mistaken. PROVENANCE: Ben Michel collection, Fall 2007, James D. Julia. CONDITION: Blade is bright/grey with scattered areas of staining and pitting. Brass hilt and scabbard mounts have a pleasing patina. Original spring retains traces of blue under an overall pitted surface. Scabbard body is crazed with about 30% of black coating chipped away. GR Name Value Blade Length 21 - 3/4" Overall Length 26 - 1/2" Paperwork Previous Julia description
