Powell, R.H. Cromek, S.J. Neele, et al. after W. Alexander. (Some very minor spotting, the plates all bound together following the errata leaf.) 20th-century half calf gilt, uncut. FIRST EDITION. AN UNCUT COPY OF "THE FULLEST ACCOUNT OF [BILLING'S] VOYAGE" (Hill). Sauer was appointed to the Russian expedition of 1785 to 1793, led by Captain Billings, as Private Secretary and Translator, and his narrative--"taken from the journal written for Captain Billings, which I copied from the ship's journal kept by the Master Batakoff and his mates" (quoted from p. xiii)--is the fullest account of the voyage. The expedition charted Alaska and the Aleutians, and the two standard accounts are Sauer's and Sarychev's (see previous lot), which was first published in Russian in the same year. The appendices, contain vocabularies of the languages spoken in the areas visited, Catherine the Great's instructions to the expedition and other material relating to the expedition.
