SARAYNA, Torello. De origine et amplitudine ciuitatis Veronae . Verona: A. Putelleto, 1540. 2° (309 x 206mm). Woodcut portrait of the author by Giovanni Caroto on verso of the title-page, double-page view of Verona and its surroundings and 29 woodcuts, plans, views and architectural details of antiquities, mostly full-page or double-page and one, a view of the amphitheatre, in three blocks, the centre block printed on a double leaf and extended by leaves pasted onto either side, the double-page blocks either printed as plates or combined with text. (Partly repaired tear in K1 with slight damage to the illustrations, repaired tear in top margin of M1.) 17th-century French calf gilt, arms on sides of Henri Feydau, seigneur de Brou [Olivier 161] and his scallop in panels of spine (edges a trifle rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : Dr. Goodman (early 18th-century signature on an endpaper). FIRST EDITION of the first appearance of these magnificent illustrations by the Veronese painter and architect, Giovanni Caroto whom Sarayna has included in his text (on B4r) sketching at the site of the amphitheatre and then entering into the discussion of the subjects of the illustrations. They were then reprinted, without Sarayna's text and under Caroto's name, in the Verona, Ravagnana edition of 1560 and finally in the large folio Merlo edition of 1764. Also of interest is Sarayna's criticism of Serlio (misprinted Sergius) in the short 'Ad lectorem' under the former's portrait for his inaccuracy in describing the Veronese antiquities. Sander 6738; Mortimer, Harvard Italian , 462; Olschki Choix V, 5441; Cicognara 4089.
