SANTORINI, Giovanni Domenico. Anatomici summi septemdecim tabulae quas nunc primum edit atque explicat iisque alias addit De structura mammarum et De tunica testis vaginali. Edited by Michael Girardi. Parma: [Giambattista Bodoni for] Regia typographia, 1775. 4 o (343 x 255 mm). Frontispiece portrait and 42 engraved plates by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and others, including 21 outline key plates. (Pale stain in upper margin of some gatherings.) Contemporary paper-backed boards, printed paper spine label, entirely untrimmed (loss at head of spine). FIRST EDITION of a work that "belongs to the best of its time ..., not only as regards the dissections and illustrations, but also as to the very elaborate commentary" (Choulant-Frank, p.264). The first seventeen plates of the present work [numbered I-XVII] were originally intended for an enlarged edition of Santorini's Observationes anatomicae [Venice: 1724], but Santorini died before completing the task. Apart from its importance as an anatomical work, Santorini's Septemdecim tabulae is noteworthy as the only significant medical book printed by Giambattista Bodoni Choulant-Frank, pp. 262-264; Garrison-Morton 399.1; Heirs of Hippocrates 788; Norman 1888.
